Maple Leaf Wrestling was the unofficial name in the 1970s and 1980s of the professional wrestling promotion run by Frank Tunney in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Aligning with the World Wrestling Federation[edit]
Following Frank's death in 1983, the business was run by John's son Jack Tunney and Frank's son, Eddie Tunney. The Tunneys hosted National Wrestling Alliance and Mid-Atlantic Wrestling matches until 1984, when Jack Tunney abandoned Crockett and signed with Vince McMahon's expanding World Wrestling Federation, with Jack serving as a figurehead on-air president of the WWF from 1984–1995, while also serving as the (legitimate) president of Titan Sports Canada, the local arm of the WWF's parent company.
Continued usage of the Maple Leaf Wrestling name[edit]
Following the WWF takeover in 1984, the name Maple Leaf Wrestling continued to be used for the federation's Canadian TV program (a staple of Hamilton station CHCH-TV for many years), which the WWF took over production of after the Tunneys split from the NWA. The show was hosted by Angelo Mosca and Jack Reynolds. TV tapings for the show were held in Brantford and other cities in southern Ontario for the next two years, until the WWF ceased the tapings in 1986 and decided to simply use the Maple Leaf Wrestling name for the Canadian airings of WWF Superstars of Wrestling(with some Canadian footage, such as updates by on-air announcer and former wrestler Billy Red Lyons, and special matches taped at Maple Leaf Gardens, added in). These tapings were actually the precursor to the WWF's Wrestling Challenge, which became the "B" show to WWF Superstars Of Wrestling, the "A" show. Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse Ventura were the hosts for the Canadian tapings (with Ventura doing his famous "The Body Shop" segment), and when those tapings morphed into Challenge in 1986, Ventura was moved to the "A" show, Superstars, which had been renamed from WWF Championship Wrestling, and joined their announcers, Vince McMahon and Bruno Sammartino, to form a three-man team. Sammartino eventually left that team, making it just McMahon and Ventura. Bobby Heenan replaced Ventura as the Canadian tapings became WWF Wrestling Challenge.
The end of the Tunneys' involvement[edit]
In 1995, McMahon chose to run the shows in Toronto without any involvement from the Tunneys. The final show at the Gardens was held on September 17, 1995.

This documentary reveals the violent, bizarre depths of the world of backyard wrestling to the mainstream. Director Paul Hough was working on a syndicated wrestling program when an audition tape led him to discover the widespread phenomenon online. Males of different ages who cannot afford pro wrestling school tuition or choose to make their activities a lifestyle, turn to compete in the unsanctioned battleground of their backyard, with the use of deadly elements and weapons, such as barbed wire, light tubes, fire, glass and staple guns. The film showcases Hough's tour, as he tracks several underground wrestlers in Arizona, Nevada, California, New York and England.

Beyond the Mat - Pro Wrestling Documentary

http://6389az78yaw1qr5gg8th8-z....7cl.hop.clickbank.ne

At first, this behind-the-scenes documentary about professional wrestling seems as if it will be an unabashed fan's whitewash of the increasingly bizarre and popular world of "sports entertainment," as it is known. But director Barry Blaustein (a Saturday Night Live veteran who has cowritten many of Eddie Murphy's films) goes much deeper than you'd expect in a film that is at once entertaining and disturbing. By focusing on a trio of wrestlers who give him surprising access, Blaustein uncovers human stories that can be wrenching in their stark honesty. That's particularly true of one-time superstar Jake "the Snake" Roberts, whose career has fallen on hard times because of a crack habit; Roberts brings Blaustein along for his first encounter in several years with his grown, estranged daughter. Blaustein also goes into the lives of Terry Funk and Mick "Mankind" Foley in ways that are both revealing and, at times, upsetting. More than just a fan's appreciation, this is that rare documentary that shows you sides of a familiar subject you never knew existed. -

Continental Wrestling Association (later the Championship Wrestling Association) was a wrestling promotion managed by Jerry Jarrett. The CWA was the name of the "governing body" for the Championship Wrestling, Inc. promotion which was usually referred to as Mid-Southern Wrestling or the Memphis territory. This promotion was a chief NWA territory during the 1970s and early 1980s while operating out of Tennessee and Kentucky. The CWA was a member of the National Wrestling Alliance until 1986 and affiliated with the American Wrestling Association until 1989. In 1989, the CWA merged with the World Class Wrestling Association to form the United States Wrestling Association thus ceasing to exist as a separate entity. Lance Russell and Dave Brown were the television commentators and hosts for the Memphis territory, including the Continelntal Wrestling Association.
The professional wrestling territory[1] commonly referred to as the “Memphis Area” was originally part of the NWA Mid-America promotion that was founded in the 1940s. It operated in Memphis and Nashville, Tennessee, but also included stops in surrounding cities and states. The "NWA Mid-American" territory featured tag teams in nearly all of its main events, and sometimes featuring only one or two singles matches to compliment an evening of tag matches. Such teams as The Von Brauners, The Interns, The Infernos, The Bounty Hunters, Tojo Yamamoto and Jerry Jarrett, Don and Al Green, Bobby Hart and Lorenzo Parente, The Fabulous Kangaroos, Jerry Lawler and Jim White, The Fabulous Fargos, and a host of other teams were regulars. During the mid-1970s the focal point of the territory changed from tag wrestling to singles action.
In the mid-1970s the territory split in two, with separate promoters for each half. Jerry Jarrett was in charge of Memphis, Louisville, Lexington and Evansville while still part of NWA Mid-America, while Nick Gulas, who had been the primary booker, continued to promote the other half of the territory. Many of the wrestlers in the promotion were upset at Gulas for over booking his son George Gulas in the profitable Memphis half of the territory. It was very hard to believe that George could regularly beat his larger more experienced foes. George was given matches and wins over longtime veterans of the territory without "paying his dues". After Jarrett had invested a large sum of money into what he thought was a 10%-share of the promotion and learned that Gulas had tricked him into paying for an option to buy less (which by the time he learned had already expired), he decided to go his own way. Jarrett decided to break away by starting competing cards at the Cook Convention Center in March 1977. Gulas, who lived in Nashville, eventually made "Music City" his home base, running weekly cards at the Fairgrounds and all over mid-Tennessee. Originally Gulas was backed by many of the areas top draws. Jarrett, however, was backed by Jerry Lawler, who had just toppled Jackie Fargo as the headliner of the area, and second with Lawler he had Memphis. Gulas did attempt to run shows in Memphis for some time but without the headliner, Lawler, he could not compete. This split between Gulas and Jarrett created the Continental Wrestling Association as a totally separate promotion run by Jarrett. In 1980 after only three years, the Gulas territory folded when Gulas retired and the CWA took over some of the more profitable locations (e.g. Nashville).

The Universal Wrestling Federation was owner Bill Watts' attempt at taking his Mid-South Wrestling promotion to a national level in 1986.
The attempt failed and in 1987, Watts sold the organization to Jim Crockett Promotions and it became part of what would later be known as World Championship Wrestling. The promotion had started out as an NWA Territory known as NWA Tri-State
founded by former territory wrestler, Leroy McGuirk in the 1950s.
Tri-State promoted in Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi, the same area that Mid-South wrestling ran before attempting to go national.

In 1990, Herb Abrams started an unrelated wrestling promotion with the same name.

Bob Caudle Introduces Mid-Atlantic Memories Project

1 Views · 11 months ago

"Mid-Atlantic Memories" Documentary Needs Your Support!

"We need your help, and we need to get you involved." Those words, spoken by the legendary "Voice of Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling" Bob Caudle, are sincere.

"Mid-Atlantic Memories" is ground-breaking movie project looking at wrestling in the Carolinas during the '60s, '70s and '80s. Wrestling the way it used to be, as told by the promoters, the wrestlers and the fans -- the folks that lived it, and the folks that LOVED IT!

Thanks for taking a moment to watch this introductory video from Bob Caudle, and look for another here on YouTube with Jim Cornette, as both explain the concept. Also, please take a moment to visit http://www.postandcourier.com/....article/20130512/PC2 to read Mike Mooneyham's recent column about the project.

Producer John Andosca's feature-length documentary is a monumental project, and we need your financial support. Money that will help insure that we're able to include everyone -- promoter, wrestler and fan -- that would like to participate and share their "Mid-Atlantic Memories."

To date, we've filmed interviews with dozens of fans and almost two dozen folks that were intimately involved in wrestling in the Carolinas in the last half-century. We have footage "in the can" from Bob Caudle, Les Thatcher, Kendall and Barry Windham, Ricky Morton, Robert Gibson, Jim Cornette, Dennis Condrey, Bobby Eaton, Angelo Mosca, Rich Landrum, James J. Dillon, Johnny Powers, Lars Anderson, Tiger Conway Jr., Baron Von Raschke, Ken Patera, Tony Atlas, Danny Miller, The Assassin (Joe Hamilton,) and Mr. Wrestling II (John Walker.)

Remaining are countless others we hope to sit down with and record their "Mid-Atlantic Memories" -- folks like Ric Flair, Roddy Piper, Blackjack Mulligan, Ox Baker, Jerry Brisco, Tully Blanchard, Greg Valentine, Ivan and Nikita Koloff, Ole Anderson, Magnum T.A., Thunderbolt Patterson, Jimmy Snuka, Iron Sheik, Jimmy Valiant, Elliott Murnick and the Crockett family. And there are so many more!

We're hopeful that we can get former world champions Harley Race, Ron Garvin, Tommy Rich, Dory Funk Jr. and Terry Funk to share their memories about their time spent in the Carolinas, as well.

As important as the former wrestlers are to this project, equally as important are the fans. We're seeking out many more fans that have memories they'd like to share on camera for possible inclusion in the final film project.

This project has been almost a year in the making. We hope to reveal the final, finished product at this summer's 2014 Mid-Atlantic Wrestling Legends Fanfest in Charlotte, but that isn't a deadline set in stone. Most importantly, we want to do this right, and with no limitations! We want, as Bob Caudle says in this video, for this to be a "near accurate and incredible collection of stories about pro wrestling's greatest territory!" And we can assure you it will be nothing less. As we say down south, it will be done right!

We'll be spending countless hours on the road, going far and wide, travelling to the homes of a lot of these folks. It will take a large amount of money to fund a project of this magnitude. We have chosen to bypass the increasingly popular "Kickstarter" method of raising funds, simply to eliminate the middleman. We want to insure you that every dollar you contribute goes directly to the project, not siphoned off for processing fees, etc. That's why we've chosen this method for our fundraising campaign.

Please visit http://www.MidAtlanticLegends.....com/2014/documentary and take a look at the different levels of participation, and all of the "perks" that are being offered with each contribution. Please consider supporting this effort financially.

Thanks very much, in advance, for your support and helping us make this happen!

If you have any questions, please email NWALegends@aol.com
